Text Box: Quality management Short course   Introduction  The purpose of this course is to explain how the requirements of Quality Management System ISO 9001 and NAFEMS QSS 001 (a supplement to ISO 9001 for engineering simulation), can be applied to manage a computational modelling process for simulation applications. The course can be used to assist in the development and implementation of a quality management system for simulation applications, or in adapting to or integrating with, a wider quality system. On completion of the course the attendee should have gained sufficient understanding of the basic concepts to begin to plan and develop a quality management system within their own organisation. Alternatively, the course can be used simply to gain awareness of best practice quality management methods in computational modelling. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the basic concepts of the ISO 9001 and QSS 001 process-based quality models and their practical application to simulation, rather than on the detail of formal quality procedures and documentation. The course will begin with an introduction to ISO 9001 and QSS 001, and will then proceed to overview the simulation process. The particular QSS 001 interpretation of ISO 9001, and how it can be applied to simulation project management, will be explained. Formal quality management system requirements will then be discussed along with issues relating to the design, implementation, maintenance and, if required, formal certification of the system. Finally, the effect of the implemented quality system on simulation product quality, and on the working practices and culture of the organisation, will be discussed.
